The brine tank drains out the magnesium and calcium ions present in the resin tank and replaces them with sodium ions and provides you soft water.
There are two types of home water softeners available- Automatic softeners and Demand initiated regeneration (DIR). Automatic softeners come with a timer that controls the ion regeneration process, usually at night. Demand initiated regeneration runs on autopilot mode, everything in this is pre planned and the softener does what it has to do depending on the usage of water.
Instead of these mineral based softeners other softeners are also available in the market that uses charcoal filters or any other technology to remove hardness but all such softeners are costly than traditional ones.
Water softener system is not a device that a homeowner will take again and again. Hence, he needs to take a decision in a single go and prefer a softener that goes with all his necessities.
Selection of a softener also depends on amount of water used and in turn number of members in your family. Approximately 240 gallons of water are used in a family of 3 members and a gallon contains around 10 grains of hardness. So you need to take a softener that has efficiency to remove 2400 grains per day and work properly.
